- Dolly's first gospel album
Dolly has recorded a fair number of gospel songs or songs that could be interpreted as gospel songs, but this 1970 album was the first (and for a long time, only) full gospel album that she did. Dolly eventually recorded a second gospel album, Precious memories, but this was never put on general sale so is not easy to get, especially for those of us who do not live in America. This album, like all of Dolly's early albums, was recorded in a simple, traditional country style.
Seven of the songs here are originals written by Dolly or members of her family. Of these, I particularly like The master's hand (since covered by the New Coon Creek Girls) and the title track but all the original songs are wonderful. Three famous gospel songs are also included, these being I believe (the most successful gospel song in British chart history, though sadly not because of Dolly's version), How great thou art and Wings of a dove.
This album was a rarity on vinyl so it was particularly good to see it made available on CD. Later, it was re-issued with a different title (I believe) and different artwork and the track sequence altered. Only the record company know why these changes were made, but as I write this review, that version of the album is still in print.

Ask any long-time Dolly Parton fan what is the one album they have been searching for for years and they have come up empty and they will tell you her 1971 "The Golden Streets of Glory" LP is her hardest and most rare vinyl album out there. The record did have a 1993 release on CD, but RCA Records only produced a handful of copies of this, her first gospel LP.
The set went to #22 on the country charts which is something of a miracle for the fact that this wasn't a country album, nor did it have any singles released from it. However, this to me is one of her finest records. Highlights here are Dolly's self-penned title track, "The Master's Hand" (also written by the Doll), her covers of "I Believe", "How Great Thou Art", and "Wings of a Dove".
In 2010 RCA released a CD on Dolly called "Letter To Heaven" that featured the bulk of her religious recordings she made for the label along with the never-released before song" "Would You Know Him (If You Saw Him?) that was cut from the final release of "The Golden Streets of Glory".
The album art of this record is one of Dolly's most beautiful with Dolly adorning the right side and a painting of the Golden Streets on the left.
