Jews Off the Hook At Last as Christian Mini-Moguls Fight Amongst Themselves [Holy Wars]Come for the illustration featuring Jesus locked in fisticuffs with a Jewish studio mogul, but stay a while at Heeb Magazine for Eric Kohn's nifty survey of how Mel Gibson ruined it for the rest of the Christians trying to get a leg up in Hollywood. Well, kind of: It turns out all the conspiracy theories in the world can't explain why, after The Passion grossed $600 million worldwide in 2004, our friends in Christ haven't been able to break through with another global hit for the faithful. Is it the Jews? Is it the MPAA? Or is it just, as one infamous anecdote alludes, that some of these guys make pouty Edward Norton look positively docile in comparison?[T]he Left Behind saga offers an interesting example of this approach gone awry. The books became a movie franchise—with two sequels to date—under the guidance of Cloud Ten Pictures, an independent studio that specializes in spreading the Gospel. Made on the cheap with ultra-cheesy production value and only successful in the direct-to-video market (and church screenings), the films angered Tim LaHaye, [Jerry B.] Jenkins' writing partner, to the point where he sued the studio for not making blockbusters out of the books. The lawsuit never went anywhere, but the studio is still trying to settle with LaHaye. "It's been a long, ongoing concern of ours," says André Van Heerden, Cloud Ten CEO and co-writer of the films. "The claims are baseless, but it has hurt our ability to do business. It's something we wish we all could have avoided." Jenkins, meanwhile, sides with his colleague. "The Passion of the Christ revealed the massive scope of the audience," he says. "Whenever I see a big budget, special effects-laden picture, I imagine what might have been." We, too, could use a fun Apocalypse picture these days — preferably something with the grit and gristle of The Passion, but maybe with Left Behind franchise star Kirk Cameron symbolically flayed by a fork-tongued studio exec eager to show the former teen

Stephen Colbert Tests Columbia Prof On Textbooks (WATCH)The Texas State Board of Education has voted to radically alter textbook lessons for future generations, removing from curricula separation of church and state and references to Thomas Jefferson. In response, Stephen Colbert had textbook author and Columbia professor Eric Foner on his show Monday night to talk textbooks and "to answer for his liberal crimes." As the Columbia Daily Spectator says of the history professor's performance on the show, "When backed into a corner by Colbert, Foner to

Jack Nicholson. On Coldwater Cyn. Driving North. Why, in this heat would anyone be driving into the 818? But if Jack can do it, I sure can. But I was driving South and almost crashed into the church when I saw him in his hip ass convertible silver car. Didn't catch the model and make because he looked so cool in his sunglasses and aforementioned car. He is so cool that he may not have melted today in the 818... · heath ledger was blonde and ponytailed at the spindrift show on 6th street tuesday night. whatever... he was unobtrusive and acted like a normal person, blah, blah, blah, but who cares about boring heath ledger when patrick fucking swayze shows up in pink pants a black and white tiger-print seventies-collared shirt and a platinum blond mullet of a wig? (a costume probably? he was filming next door.) anyway, he couldn't have been cooler, laughing and posing for pictures and signing autographs and doing a couple dirty dancing wiggles and a roadhouse kick for the ladies. then he waved and disappeared like a some kind of magical leprechaun who'd given us a pot of awesomeness. fuck yeah, patrick swayze. you rule! · Aug 16 Hey, so my friend and I were enjoying the tasty delights of Loteria! Connie Britton: Helping 'Friday Night Lights' (The Best Show On TV) ShineNEW YORK — Early this season on "Friday Night Lights," a sportscaster declares with a hearty twang that everyone gathered for the Panthers' football game is "exactly where God wants you to be." It's not hard to imagine a similar sense of calling among everyone who watches "Friday Night Lights." Airing Friday at 9 p.m. EDT on NBC, this uniquely down-to-earth drama has always seemed sort of heaven-sent. Embedded in a small Texas town where the locals attend church but worship at the altar of high school football, "Lights" stars Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor, a father and family man, and Connie Britton as his wife, Tami, who, besides co-parenting a baby and teenage daughter, this season came aboard as Dillon High School's principal. Dillon, Texas, has a crisp specificity on "Lights," but, even so, it occupies a sprawling common ground with its audience. Here's an everyday world, beautifully observed, that's familiar to viewers from their own experience. "It's important for us to show all the elements of being in a community in a very real way, without commenting on it or judging it, but just letting these characters exist in it," says Britton, who spent her childhood in the community of Lynchberg, Va. She starred with Michael J. Fox for five seasons on the sitcom "Spin City," and was a regular on "24." After playing the coach's wife as a marginal figure in the 2004 feature film "Friday Night Lights," Britton returned for the series to claim equal status with Chandler as TV's most deliciously authentic married couple, and the nucleus of a sizable ensemble cast. The Peabody Award-winning "Lights" does a neat trick, exploring a football-crazy town without resorting to stereotypes. There are hot-looking teens, feisty older folks and a range of other well-drawn Dillon residents. But Eric and Tami provide the loving narrative core. They ground the series' action and each other, while they face their share of squabbles. "When you have disagreements in a rel
