George Jones Album: “50 Years of Hits”
Description :
Personnel include: George Jones (vocals, guitar); Melba Montgomery (vocals); Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Merle Haggard, Randy Travis, Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings.

Recording information: 1955 - 2004.

Even the title of the three-disc George Jones collection 50 YEARS OF HITS should be enough to tell you that the man being anthologized is one of the all-time giants of country music. A towering influence on all that followed him, not only in country but in rock and pop as well, Jones started out in the 1950s as a Hank Williams-influenced honky-tonk man who wasn't afraid of a little rockabilly either (the Hank influence is clearly audible on such early tracks as "Just One More"). By the '60s, he'd refined his approach, taking a bit from the jazz-inflected style of Lefty Frizzell and becoming a striking balladeer. "She Thinks I Still Care" and "Color of the Blues" stand as templates for how to sing a country ballad.

For most performers, that would have been enough, but Jones never stopped turning out heart-stopping performances. This is underscored by the presence of the mid-period mind-blower "He Stopped Loving Her Today," which reaches a superhuman level of pathos, and latter-day tracks such as the unstintingly bleak "The Cold Hard Truth," as well as the high-spirited, good-humored "Beer Run (B Double E Double Are You In?)." In case future generations want to know what country music was all about back in the 20th century, there should be a copy of 50 YEARS OF HITS placed in a time capsule.

- george jones NEVER disappoints
He's incapable of it! This 3-disc compilation is a must for any Jones fan. Disc 2 is my favorite - it has many of his Billy Sherrill-era hits on it, and it's sweet to have them back to back on one cd. But the cds with early years hits and later stuff are great too. You cannot quibble with such greatness. George Jones - one of the world's all time best singers.

- Outstanding!
If you love George Jones like many of us do, you must buy this set! It is probably the BEST of ALL his recordings. The quality is pure, crisp, studio sound with his best vocals. I have many recordings of George Jones, but this set is simply the best versions of his repitoire!

- NO NEED A ROCKING CHAIR FOR THIS MAN
George Jones is truly a living legend of country music. He's been through thick and thin for all his life, both in his career and personal life. Countless of hit songs sung by this man seemed to sprinkle all over here and there in the industry, and I found it so hard to collect them all ( Is there anybody on earth who got everything he ever recorded?) Thus, this is a very good chance to, at least, admire his works in a single effort. Every song is a gem. My advice is that you got to have this collection; beg, borrow or steal! (of course, buy it)He's one of very few country singers out there whose new CD could be drawn money from my pocket for a sight unseen and a tune unheard!

- Decades of George Jones
I've always been a George Jones fan, and have a couple of his albums. I wanted to get a "best of" type album that includes all his big hits in one place. I am very pleased with this collection, and also enjoyed reading the interview with George and some of the history of the songs in the CD insert.
The album is broken down into one decade on each of the three CDs - the 60s, 70s and 80s. Although some of his hits have been left off the collection, it would be impossible to include all of them. The man is a legend in country music, and has been churning out the hits for forty years! I'm glad they didn't put any of his duets with Tammy Wynette in the collection - they deserve their own album. Each and every one of George's hits show his honesty, his partying nature, and some of his heartbreak and regrets. Very few other singers in any genre can match the emotion that George puts in his songs.
If you're looking for one great collection of his hits, this is the one!

- To R. Riis "rriis" and other Amazon reviewers
Before you write a review for a cd, why not read the liner notes that comes with a cd? R. Riis complains that alot of great songs are missing. If you read the liner notes, it says they could only choose one song per year and some songs couldnt be included because of copyrights. Im so tired of reading reviews for cds with people writing stuff that bugs them, when its explained to them inside the cd booklet. This cd was my first George Jones cd, and a excellent start. Alot of big hits are here, and this will make you want to buy more George Jones. As one reviewer said, he is the Sinatra of country.
