Standing out among all the glib, cowboy-hatted moneymakers whose version of country is really just cheesy pop-rock with a pedal steel, George Strait plays it, well, straight. While he's no "Progressive Country" rebel on the order of Steve Earle or Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Strait eschews the cheap, easy hook and vapid lyric in favor of a restrained, thoughtful approach, as shown on ONE STEP AT A TIME. Though he's not above upping the tempo, Strait's strength lies in the ballads that make up the bulk of this album.

There are a few moments on ONE STEP AT A TIME where a tasteful electric guitar will leap to the forefront, but we're not talking Travis Tritt here, most of the songs are acoustic-based, and leave plenty of room for Strait's subtle, determined vocal delivery. He's got the cream of the country crop contributing songs, including Robert Earl Keen, Jim Lauderdale and John Prine, who cowrote one of the more memorable tunes, "I Just Want To Dance With You." Produced by Strait and Nashville institution Tony Brown, ONE STEP takes the legacy of this consistently listenable vocalist one step further.

- Still great music
This Cd has recieved a lot of average reviews because, supposedly, George strayed from his traditional roots. There is still some great music on this Cd that makes it worth buying! We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This, I Just Wanna Dance With You, Why Not Now, and especially Maria are my favorites. I listen to every song on this CD everytime I play it, never want to skip any of them! George didn't stray from traditional country music, he is just adapting. This CD is a worhty of your hard earned money! A lot of great listening music to add to your collection! BUY IT!

- Not the typical George Strait album, but not bad
I bought One Step At A Time because I couldn't get enough of the song, "True." I also liked the hits "I Just Wanna Dance With You" and "We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This." However, after listening to the rest of the songs, I sort of thought that this album wasn't the typical George Strait album; especially not when you compare it to some of the other great ones such as Carrying Your Love With Me and Blue Clear Sky. The only songs I liked other than the 3 hits were the title track and "Remember The Alamo." I thought the rest of the songs were just mediocre and not up to the usual George Strait standard.
Overall, if you're a George Strait fan, I would recommend getting this album. But if you only get a few of his albums, this is not one of his best.

- Bought it twice!
After reading some of the other interviews, I am wondering why other people do not love this CD as much as I do. I have purchased it two times! The first time was for my country loving husband. We enjoyed listening to it for a while, only to lose it some time later. I purchased a George Strait greatest hits CD thinking it might be better than the lost CD, but there was no comparison. After months of being without One Step at a Time, I was not happy until I bought it again! I especially like the first two tracks, I Want to Dance With you and One Step at a Time. It is my opinion this is George Strait at his best!

- Still Good George
While this was an ever so slight slip down on his otherwise perfect album output, it still stands head and shoulders over all other Country albums. What really helps keep this album good is the outstanding near-perfect dance number "We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This". This song just kicks you in the Wranglers and makes ya dance! ONE STEP AT A TIME might not be his best step, but I'd never say anything bad about THE man!
