Glen Campbell has for long been associated with the work of Jim Webb, i.e. Galveston, Wichita Lineman, Where's The Playground Susie, By The Time I Get To Phoenix, etc. (Strangely, he hasn't Jim Webb's standout piece McArthur Park.)
One of the best voices in pop and country music, Glen Campbell shows his adeptness in both genres as he goes a little bit farther in this two-CD compilation.
Here he sings with great gusto his signature song Gentle On My Mind, a great song that attempts to paint in words a great panoramic landscape as seen from within a person's wandering spirit. Coupled with the restless and flowing guitar accompaniment, Glen's performance of this song is one that I never get tire of hearing even after repeated playing.
Other musical landmarks in pop and country music are represented here: Hank Williams' Your Cheating Heart and I Can't Help It; Kris Kristofferson's Help Me Make It Through The Night; Conway Twitty's It's Only Make Believe; the vastly popular hymn Amazing Grace; All I Have To Do Is Dream, a song originally brought into the mainstream years earlier by the Everly Brothers; and other popular hits like Together Again, My Special Angel, Take These Chains From My Heart, etc.
All these songs are good and will stand the test of time. Given Glen Campbell's masterful treatment, they become great works of art.
How could a box set not have Southern Night's. By far campbell's best song, I was disappointed not to find this great title among the box set.
A word of caution to buyers:
While this collection may look enticing for its unbeatable price and comprehensive song listings, the disc quality leaves much to be desired. This is a Disky disc made in the EU. Static and hiss can be heard at certain points, most noticeably during one of my favourite songs - If You Could Read My Mind.
Unless you can ignore the audio problems, I would not recommend this item.
