This is an enjoyable collection of some of the legendary artist's greatest hits. With the exception of Take These Chains From My Heart, With Tears In My Eyes and Settin' The Woods On Fire, all the songs were written or co-written by Williams. They are all well-known classics; my personal favorites include Long Gone Lonesome Blues with its impressive yodelling, Cold Cold Heart - the narrative of a doomed relationship, the autobiographical Ramblin' Man, the sad tale of Kaw-Liga and the much covered Jambalaya. This man had a remarkable poetic gift and there's a spiritual undertone to many of the songs. The CD insert includes a biographical sketch by Mark Brennan and a black & white photograph. There are of course many more extensive compilations of this genius' ageless music but this album serves as a good introduction for the novice. I also recommend the highly engaging biography
by Paul Hemphill, a book that explains the circumstances and the background to many of the songs.
