Death Cab at the DNC: John McCain Scares Chris Walla to DeathPhoto: CNN On the stereo: “Counting Down the Hours,” Ted Leo + Pharmacists Okay, here it goes: I think John McCain is losing his marbles and that he can’t be trusted. I think that his hotheaded, impulsive mentality makes him an incredibly dangerous candidate for the office of President. There, I said it. He has given to our country selflessly in uniform, risked his life for our freedoms and committed himself to a life of public service. And it’s time for him to fucking retire. Seriously. Like, I’ll totally buy the mai tais or piña coladas or whatever the fuck you want to drink, Senator. You name it, really; it’s on me. Can I go further? I would like to, as I’ve just found out that McCain will likely be leaking his pick for VP right after tonight’s rally at the Mile High Stadium in Denver, where Barack Obama will officially accept my party’s nomination of him for the office of President. That’s MY party you’re gonna crash, you rat. Now, there’s a long history of mudslinging and dirty pool in the race to the White House, and we’ve already seen a fair bit of it. But historically, each party’s convention week is off limits, to a degree: It’s diplomacy, a show of respect, to allow your opponent the spotlight for four days. Certainly there are ads and press releases from the rival team, but there’s no precedent for a headline-stealer like a VP announcement. Let’s refer, briefly, to a statement issued by McCain campaign manager Rick Davis on March 11, 2008: “John McCain is now the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party. It is critical, as we prepare to face off with whomever the Democrats select as their nominee, that we all follow John’s lead and run a respectful campaign focused on the issues and values that are important to the American people. Throughout the primary election we saw John McCain reject the type of politics that degrade our civics, and this will not change as he prepares to run head-to-head against the Democratic nominee.” Really? So that makes McCai

Widespread Panic: Go Behind the Jam on the Band’s Tour Bus Widespread Panic released their tenth studio album this year, Free Somehow, a record of riff-heavy jams and howling psychedelic ballads. But the band has never been defined by albums, but their endless touring and cult of loyal fans. For more than 20 years they have lived on the road, performing up to 250 shows a year — and never playing the same set list twice. They hold sell-out records at several venues around the country including the Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver (23 shows), and have been on the list of the top 50 grossing tour bands for eight consecutive years. On a recent stop in New York, guitarist-singer John Bell, new guitarist Jimmy Herring and percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz discussed memories from the road, critical road-trip food, and of course, the art of the jam. Click here to watch a series of videos as Rock Daily boards their tour bus for some intimate chats with Widespread Panic.

Get Ready to Pay Big Fees: Live Nation Ticketing Service LaunchesAfter splitting with Ticketmaster and locking down massive 360 deals with Madonna and Jay-Z, Live Nation has finally launched its own ticketing service. As of right now, in-house tickets can only be purchased for concerts taking place in Live Nation-owned venues, as the bigger amphitheatres already have ticketing deals in place. Still, the company’s Website is vending tix for Lil Wayne, John Legend, Elton John & Billy Joel, the Pretenders and many more. Rock Daily tested out the ticket purchasing system on the Live Nation Website — in this case, buying a ticket for the Gov’t Mule concert in Denver, Colorado on February 13th — and made a frightening discovery: The $29.50 ticket carried along with it an additional $13.50 “Ticket Fee.” That’s exorbitant, even by Ticketmaster standards. We know their stock is landsliding but $13.50, really? We thought, maybe this is a typo or a bug in the system, to charge a third of the ticket price as a “ticket fee.” So we tried buying tickets for the Pretenders’ gig at New York’s Roseland Ballroom on January 31st. Again, the $49.50 ticket was accompanied by the $13.50 “Ticket Charge.” (Ticketmaster’s convenience charge for the Pretenders’ Philadelphia show is $9.85). “Anytime you have a major roll-out, you hold your breath and hope there are no major glitches,” Live Nation CEO of global music Jason Garner told Billboard of the launch. “We went live over the [holiday] break and I didn’t hear one complaint from anybody about the system.” Garner also says having control of its own ticketing will allow the company to be flexible with prices. “Our goal is always to have a system built around being able to satisfy what the artists and fans want,” Garner said, adding that the company would also like to capitalize more on the secondary ticket market. It’s also interesting to note how the two ticketing giants are facing off. Ticketmaster isn’t offering tickets for shows hosted by Live Nation, while Live Nation links to Ticketmaster for shows

Stevie Wonder, Will.i.am, Sheryl Crow Close Out DNC FestivitiesPhoto: Getty When a recording of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In the U.S.A.” blared through the speakers at Invesco Field at Mile High after Sen. Barack Obama’s acceptance speech Thursday night, it was official. Springsteen, rumored all week to close the final night, would not show. Thus did ex- Doobie Brother Michael McDonald have the last musical word a few hours earlier. Actually, the pre-Obama music was kind of a letdown: John Legend and Will.i.am brought YouTube to life with “Yes We Can,” complete with a huge live choir and Obama speaking on a video screen overhead. But all that activity on stage as delegates and spectators were filing in was confusing and the performance fell flat. Sheryl Crow did three songs with her band, opening with (altered for the occasion) “A Change Will Do Us Good.” Stevie Wonder did two, beginning with an unreleased obscurity, the hymnlike “Fear Can’t Put Dreams to Sleep,” then emphasizing “good-BYE” in his Motown chestnut “Signed, Sealed, and Delivered,” which might have been dedicated to John McCain and the Republicans. On the floor, near CNN’s podium, the Rev. Al Sharpton told Rolling Stone he first met Wonder at a concert by his friend, James Brown, in the early ’80s. Then he lamented the lack of cutting-edge hip-hop surrounding this Democratic campaign. “I know there was a lot more hip-hop presence in ‘04,” he said. The rev, by the way, has gospel, JB, Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige on his iPod. Smoking Section: Ellen Page, Adam Green, Jazz & Heritage Festival Since actress Ellen Page — you know, Juno — dragged the Moldy Peaches out of obscurity and steered her flick’s soundtrack to the Number One spot, we thought we’d probe her musical tastes. “This is going to show how young I am” — twenty — “but the first intense experience I had was when I heard ‘Pyramid Song,’ from Radiohead’s Amnesiac,” says Page. “I was like, ‘How can this paralyze me?’ ” She is just as “effin’ crazy” about In Rainbows. Also on her iPod: Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s cover of John Denver’s “The Eagle and the Hawk”; U.K. sensation Bat for Lashes (”The video for ‘What’s a Girl to Do?’ is sick!”); everything by Missy Elliott, Cat Power and Feist; and finally, “Ice Cream,” by New Young Pony Club (”Like, is that not slutty?”). Page, like Juno, plays some rudimentary guitar, but she won’t be putting out an album: “That would be lame. No one would respect me ever again.” * * * * Speaking of the Moldy Peaches, our hero Adam Green’s new album, Sixes & Sevens, is out in March — twenty songs stuffed into forty-eight action-packed minutes. “For my fifth studio album, I hired some Brooklyn gospel singers to give my music some class,” says Green. “It’s a comeback album with a message.” The single “Morning After Midnight” is already a hit in Belgium; he duets with girlfriend Loribeth Capella on “Drowning Head First”; and “You Get So Lucky” revives the pan flute. “I nearly crapped myself after that,” he says. “I knew that my life was never going to be the same.” Our favorite? “Getting Led,” which Green describes as “a sweet and tender song about fatalism and submission.” “People say I’m the Jewish Kurt Cobain,” says Green. ̶
