<p>The legendary Johnny Cash experienced something of a renaissance in the 1990s. A trio of theme albums compiling his past work fanned the flame of interest regarding The Man In Black. Their titles reveal their subject matter: LOVE, GOD, and MURDER.
<p>LOVE includes songs of fundamental devotion ("I Walk the Line," "Flesh and Blood"), obsessive anguish over unrequited love ("I Tremble for You"), and the joy that true love can bring (the rollicking Western swing of "I Feel Better All Over"). There are well-known standards such as "Ring of Fire," and lesser-known gems that deserve to be well-known standards. On the subject of LOVE, Cash--who compiled these songs--conveys its highs and lows with a down-to-earth authority born of having been there.

- Short, but oh so sweet. . .
Comprising the first third of the brilliant Cash box set "Love, God, Murder", "Love" more then stands on its own. Even though it clocks in at about 40 minutes, this is THE shining example of quality over quantity. 16 tracks of pure pleasure.
Following no chronological/treadmill order, "Love" moves beautifully around past Cash glories, recent triumphs, and the odd rarity. The standout for the Cash obsessive is the previously unreleased "I Tremble For You", which in its stark and frankly terrifying vulnerability, evokes the same emotional terrain as Springsteen's "Nebraska". Spellbinding stuff.
Personal regrets that Johnny didn't see fit to include his recent cover of "Sea Of Heartbreak", but there's simply no faulting the song selection. Cash was, is, and will always be one of the true affecting voices of music and creative expression. Long may he run. . .

- Because you're mine, I walk the line!
This album, along with his series of "God," "Murder," and "Life," shows the versatility of what Johnny Cash sang about. Only Johnny Cash could sing a believable song about Jesus and then sing a song about murder. For Johnny Cash, he carried his heart on his sleeve when he talks about being a sinner but through redemption was able to change his ways. Whatever he sings, it is pure gold.
This CD has more recognizable songs than the other 3 CD's. Standouts include "Walk The Line," "Burning Fire," "Flesh and Blood," "I Tremble For You," and "I Still Miss Someone." All these songs are pure Johnny Cash and show that tender side of him.
If you are new to Johnny Cash's music, I recommend that you buy a "Best Of" and not starting here so you can get a broader range of song topics. But for a longtime fan, this is a must have.

- Love is a burning thing
This is a collection of love songs by Johnny Cash, personally selected by Cash himself. The earliest song is from 1956 and the most recent song is from 1996. Two of the songs were previously unreleased in the U.S. This is a solid collection of songs about love. Of course, most songs are about love, so he had a lot to choose from. There is a nice mix of big hits and lesser known songs. Recommended to Johnny Cash fans. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:
- Love
Such a beautiful album. Johnny Cash sounds wonderful on this cd, and all the cuts are outstanding. The best of the best, though, is without doubt "I Tremble For You", so drenched in grief and loss that it evokes the very meaning of the word "bereft". His voice is perfect for this song, written by him and the late Lou DeWitt (Flowers on the Wall), sounding as raw and painful as the words in the song. The rest of the album isn't quite as dark, and the whole thing is just wonderful. - True classic
Johnny Cash is one in a million and this album just shows why. You just have to listen to it to understand it. |
