Live at Rolling Stone: Jamey Johnson Covers Kris KristoffersonRolling Stone is always thrilled to capture a young star covering a legend’s work, and that’s exactly what happened when onetime Breaking artist Jamey Johnson stopped by our studios for an acoustic rendition of Kris Kristofferson’s “A Moment of Forever.” Kristofferson was also the subject of a recent RS story: an epic profile by Ethan Hawke in Issue 1076. Check out Hawke’s guide to the outlaw poet’s essential tracks and click above to watch Johnson’s performance.

The Essential Kris Kristofferson: Hear 20 Key TracksPhoto: David LaChapelle The current issue of Rolling Stone features an epic Kris Kristofferson profile written by Ethan Hawke. As our managing editor Will Dana explains in his Editor’s Note, Hawke approached RS with the story idea, arguing that as Kristofferson has leathered into grand-old-man authenticity, he has recorded a string of excellent albums — and still managed to steal a film every few years. So we turned 14 pages over to Hawke, who told us, “[Kristofferson] achieved an incredible le

Les Paul to Be Honored By Rock Hall With American Music Masters ConcertPhoto: Wintrow/Getty Guitarist Les Paul will be honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Gibson Guitars on November 15th as part of this year’s American Music Masters series. “The Wizard of Waukesha: The Life and Legacy of Les Paul” will hit the stage of Cleveland’s Playhouse Square State Theatre and feature a week’s worth of events dedicated to the guitar pioneer, including panels, film screenings and even an academic conference. The tribute culminates with a concert on the 15th, which organizers hope the 93-year-old Paul can attend. Paul was inducted into the RRHOF in 1988 and performed a sold-out show at the venue in 2004. The list of performers that will play the concert will be announced soon. Paul is only the second living American musician to be honored by the American Music Masters series; past honorees include Sam Cooke, Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly. At last year’s tribute to Jerry Lee Lewis, the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde, George Thorogood and Kris Kristofferson took the stage.

Weekend Rock List: Best Musicians-Slash-Actors After reading the I’m Not There feature in the current issue of Rolling Stone, rather than thinking about actors who play musicians (like in the Bob Dylan biopic), we started thinking about musicians who are also actors. For instance, nothing beats the thrill of watching a really horrible film, like Torque or The Rage: Carrie 2, and suddenly seeing X’s John Doe come on screen. To pay tribute to those artists that double as talented actors, we ask you which artists pulling double-duty are your favorites. On Monday, we’ll hand out our Oscars for the Best Acting Musicians. Although we’re really tempted to throw Reba McEntire on this list based solely on her performance in Tremors, these are our five picks: David Bowie (Labyrinth, The Man Who Fell to Earth) Mos Def (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, 16 Blocks) Kris Kristofferson (Silver City, A Star Is Born) Courtney Love (The People Vs. Larry Flynt, Sid & Nancy) Tom Waits (Down By Law, Short Cuts)

Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Eddie Vedder to Help Celebrate Pete Seeger’s 90thPhoto: Ngan/AFP/Getty Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Eddie Vedder, Tom Morello and dozens of other musicians will help Pete Seeger celebrate his 90th birthday May 3rd, during a concert at Madison Square Garden. The concert — which will also feature performances of the folk icon’s songs by Warren Haynes, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Emmylou Harris and Kris Kristofferson — will benefit the Clearwater organization, organizers announced this morning. “It’s a huge honor,” Seeger told Rolling Stone. “Normally, I don’t ever go in for big things. Bruce [Springsteen] had to persuade me to go down to Washington; and Clearwater had to persuade me to do Madison Square Garden.” In 2006, Springsteen released We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, a collection of folk songs made famous by Seeger. The pair was also joined by Seeger’s grandson for a performance of “This Land Is Your Land” as part of President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremonies in January. “I grew up sneaking into folk clubs when I was 14-years-old, to hear local folksingers, and Pete was a hero,” Haynes said. “I don’t think I could miss it.” The show will also reunite Seeger with Joan Baez, who also performed with him at the inauguration ceremonies, and sat down for an RS interview earlier this year. The banjo-slinging activist singer-songwriter founded Hudson River Sloop Clearwater in 1969 to help trigger a cleanup of the Hudson River, which for decades has been polluted by cancer-causing PCBs. Seeger lives in Dutchess County, New York, not far from the river. Ticket prices will range from $19.19 (the year Seeger was born) to $250 with a majority priced at $90 to honor Pete’s milestone. Additional ticket information can be found at the Clearwater Concert Website.

Soundstage: Joy Division, Paris Hilton and DMX On Film Welcome to Rock Daily’s new column tracking rock on the big screen. Stay tuned so you don’t miss the next Walk the Line, The Doors or even Get Rich or Die Tryin’. The Joy Division biopic Control will get a New York City release on October 10. The movie, which is based on Deborah Curtis’ (frontman Ian’s wife) book Touching From a Distance, will be rock-photographer legend and music video director Anton Corbijn’s first foray into the feature-film business. The film stars relatively unknown British actor Sam Riley as Curtis and Oscar-nominated Sweet and Lowdown actress Samantha Morton as Deborah. The remaining members of Joy Division will help supply songs for the film’s soundtrack. Though we hesitate to call her a rock star (or a singer … or an actress), Paris Hilton is once again trying her hand on the big screen, this time — gasp — in a musical. The recently incarcerated heiress will attempt to sing and act simultaneously in Repo! The Genetic Opera, a sci-fi musical set in the year 2056, where Hilton will portray the privileged daughter of Paul Sorvino. “I have auditioned at least 30 actresses for this role; Paris came in and owned it,” said Saw director Darren Lynn Bousman. “She is the role.” So, um, who were these other actresses? And New York rapper DMX is currently shooting the action film Jump Out Boys opposite Planet of the Apes‘ Kris Kristofferson in Louisiana. The movie follows the adventures of two escaped convicts. Expect plenty of car chases and explosions, and we presume very little acting.
