Review - AMG :
Where many country stars have taken rather disastrous detours down the gospel road in their careers, making albums that, in retrospect, sound inferior and out of place when viewed in the artist's total body of work, Loretta Lynn makes gospel music that proves gospel is one of country's major underlying influences. Stunning harmonies in "In the Sweet Bye and Bye" and banjo-driven tunes like "Old Camp Meetin' Time" are reminiscent of the Carter Family and sound as if Lynn has been singing them her whole life. The only major disappointment for this budget-priced collection is that it clocks in at a measly 21 minutes, contains only eight songs, and includes no liner notes of any sort. Still, of the eight tracks (two of which include vocal and instrumental accompaniment by the Jordanaires), there is no filler and a very traditional country-gospel sound is consistent throughout. The Old Rugged Cross is an inexpensive place to start. ~ Matt Fink, All Music Guide
