This three-CD box set contains two secular best-ofs and one compilation of religious material. While the two 20th CENTURY MASTERS sets don't pretend to be definitive collections, the inclusions are hard to argue with, whether it's one of Loretta Lynn's signature songs like "Coal Miner's Daughter" or "One's on the Way," her stellar duets with Conway Twitty, like "Lead Me On" and "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man," or interestingly chosen album material, like the ravishing version of "She's Got You" from a 1977 Patsy Cline tribute. THE GOSPEL SPIRIT collects cuts from three of her gospel albums for Decca recorded in the late 1960s, all produced by the Nashville hitmaker Owen Bradley. The songs range from the familiar "Peace in the Valley" to the ominous, minor-key "Gethsemane," but Lynn's vibrant, plaintive voice sounds equally at home on all of them.
This was a great gift for my mother as it chronicled the life of a beloved star that spanned her generation and mine. What a lady, that Loretta Lynn! She has a song for absolutely every issue in life. Her songs are good medicine for whatever ails you. Mom says her songs got her through lots of life trevails.
