Merle Haggard Album: “The One & Only”

Merle Haggard Album: “The One & Only”
Description :
This best-of contains 10 of country legend Merle Haggard's best-known songs, re-recorded in the 1990s with his live band. Haggard is in good voice on this collection, which includes his best-known song, "Okie From Muskogee," as well as other hits like the semi-autobiographical "Mama Tried," the outlaw anthem "The Fugitive," and his prison ballad "Sing Me Back Home," while his band is impeccably recorded, with a fine, plain, live-in-the-studio feel.

- & lonely

One of the original Bakersfield outlaws, he wears his life on a craggy face that seems to be chiseled from granite. Album starts with his 1969 Okie from Muskogee, an anthem to return to one's roots, which he does with the next nine songs.

The Fugitive, Sing Me Back Home, Mama Tried, and The Fightin' Side of Me reveal his outlaw ways with the law, family, and society in general. Mama's Hungry Eyes tells of a husband and father who tries to provide for his family. All of that is enough to bring anybody down low enough to believe that Everybody's Had the Blues.

Today I Started Loving You Again, Carolyn, and I Threw Away the Rose are ballads to love found and lost.

Excellent compilation of a legend.
