Description :

It sounds pretty much as you'd expect, especially given the cover art, but this collision of Bakersfield country music and traditional Christmas material has a certain charm that's most apparent on the down-home versions of "Blue Christmas" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," and perhaps less perceptibly so in Merle Haggard's sly vocal on the title track. The Spanish guitar of "El Nino" is charming, while Haggard's inclusion of the stark "If We Make It Through December" is a timely reminder of the stresses that Yuletide hardship can bring.

THE CLASSICS SOUND NEW AND THE NEW ONES SOUND CLASSIC...MERLE WROTE "IF WE MAKE IT THRU DECEMBER" BACK IN THE EARLY SEVENTIES..IT WAS A # 1 COUNTRY HIT AT THE TIME AND ALSO WENT HIGH ON THE POP CHARTS. IT IS STILL RELATABLE AND TOPICAL, A BEAUTIFUL MELODY AND THE HAG SINGS JUST AS WELL AS EVER. WILLIE NELSON WROTE '' EL NINO " A GREAT CHRISTMAS SONG. THE TITLE TRACK IS CLEVER AND MUSICALLY UNIQUE IN IT'S PRESENTATION. THE GREAT HORN WORK ON THIS ALBUM ARE SUPPLIED BY THE LEGENDARY DON MARKHAM. YOU SHOULD SEND AS PRESENTS AND KEEP ONE FOR YOURSELF
