- "Concepts" Box a Must-have for Haggard fans

Even though they are all excellent, it still seems like every Bear Family set I purchase outdoes all the others. No one exceeds Bear Family for the overall care and devotion they offer to every set; to my ears at least, the re-mastering is always superb and better than other digital issues of the same material. And if you like Merle Haggard, this is some of his best material -- the Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills tributes, the live LP's, and the hard-to-find Land of Many Churches double LP set. This is all rounded off by several instrumental LP's by Merle's excellent band the Strangers. Speaking of the Strangers, Merle featured Roy Nichols on guitar and Norm Hamlet on steel for years -- if they had been free lancers out making their own names, we would be assigning them to the same categories of expertise as pickers like James Burton (also on this set quite a bit) and Speedy West. My point is that the instrumental albums are excellent as well. The hard cover book included has a lot of informative text and some great photos (where does Bear Family come up with all these old pictures?). Maybe we take Merle Haggard for granted because he's been around for so long, written so many songs, issued so many LP's and CD's, played thousands of concerts, but make no mistake; as a singer/songwriter he is almost peerless and part of a very elite group with Hank Williams and Gordon Lightfoot and few others. I've seen him in concert a few times and I don't think the man has ever sung a bad or false note in his entire career. Any Bear Family set is more than worth the investment, but especially so in the case of Merle Haggard, who is one of the best ever.

I purchased the Untamed Hawk box set when it came out then the Capitol Recordings box set now this one.I already have all of these songs minus the unreleased and Strangers stuff.I'm hoping the live in Philidelphia concert sounds better on this compilation than the re-release that BGO records turned out.They tried to make a live album sound like a studio album.It's very muffled.Anyway you can't go wrong with Merle and the Strangers.Just enjoy

- A great addition to your collection

I received this box set for my B-day. Wow am I happy with it. Once again Bear Family knocks it out of the park. Merle Haggard is one of the greatest songwriters/singers. I recommend it to all who enjoy genuine country music.
