Not to be confused with Merle Haggard's 1968 album MAMA TRIED, this concise, live-sounding best-of is one of many available compilations of the country legend's re-recorded hits. It includes his outlaw anthem, "Lonesome Fugitive," "Today I Started Loving You Again," written with Bonnie Owens, the sentimental "Soldier's Letter," and the poignant "Silver Wings." Haggard (who received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2006) and band are on fine form throughout, with the singer sounding particularly relaxed.
