When Shania Twain's self-titled debut came out in 1993, it was impossible to predict the impact she would soon have, not only on country music but on the pop world as well. She hadn't yet hooked up with producer/hubby Mutt Lange, so there's less pop crossover material here than on her subsequent releases. Instead, mainstream country is the order of the day: romantic ballads colored by appropriately sorrowful-sounding steel guitar, and perky up-tempo numbers capable of inducing a line-dance at a moment's notice.

Twain's emergence as a bared-navel sex symbol was still in the future, so there's less of a focus on the randy, sensual material that would characterize albums like COME ON OVER. "God Ain't Gonna Getcha For That" explores the mores of the honky-tonk lifestyle, while "There Goes the Neighborhood" is a chronicle of the domestic carnage that occurs around the narrator. Many changes would occur in the years to come, but SHANIA TWAIN still sports the lovely yet brassy voice and carefully constructed tunes that the singer's fans have come to expect from their heroine.

- Don't be afraid!
Okay, before I started to listen to Shania's music I hated, no - HATED country music. But since she's converted me I can really listen to and enjoy this CD. "What Made You Say That" is really good and so is "There Goes The Neighbourhood". If you don't like country music but like Shania Twain - buy this! You won't be disappointed.

- The Shania album for country fans
This album, produced by Harold Shedd and Norro Wilson, two notable country produces, has a contemporary feel but still owes a lot to traditional country with plenty of steel guitar, so it is not like any other Shania album so far released.
There are plenty of upbeat songs, giving this album a real good-time feel. Among them are What made you say that, Dance with the one that brought you, God ain't gonna getcha for that and Crime of the century. Shania also demonstrates that she can sing ballads well, particularly on When he leaves you, possibly my favorite track here, and You lay a whole lot of love on me.
It is clear from this album and from some tracks on her other albums that Shania loves country music but it is unlikely that Shania will ever record another album like this one. As such, country fans everywhere should treasure it (only the most diehard traditionalists could complain that it's not country enough), but some of Shania's normal fans may not like it all and ought to hear some of it before buying. This is my favorite Shania album although I do enjoy some of her later music in its own way.

- A stepping stone to greatness...
Well, I've had all of Shania's albums except this one for years and I finally bought it. I had heard most of it over the years so none of it was really surprising. Since the Shania/Mutt team didn't write and produce this, it's nothing like Come On Over and Up. But it still has star quality. Most of the tracks are really good, even though I rarely listen to any of it besides the first and last tracks What Made You Say That and Crime Of The Century. The ballads aren't up to par with her later ones but There Goes The Neighborhood is one of my favorites. The only song penned by Shania is God Ain't Gonna Getcha For That. This album is good but if you are a fan of Shania's pop laden music, this isn't for you.

- This album will grow on you...
I have only just obtained a copy of this album and I can safely say I REALLY like it. The first three tracks are also on the 'Platinum Collection' DVD but the rest are terrific, and 'Crime of the Century' just blew me away!
In my opinion the only artist in my album collection who comes close to Shanias effortlessly belting performance here is Patsy Cline, so if you like her you'll like this.
I know it wasn't overly successful at the time but as a retrospective I think Shania should be proud to have it in her back catalogue. It's a faultless debut and a very worthy addition to any Shania fans collection.
You may not think so at first but it WILL grow on you...

- She shines like a penny!
Last year I bought Shania's album Come on Over and was amazed by her gripping songs and beautiful voice. I immediately went looking for her previous albums and bought The Woman in Me and the album Shania Twain. This album has all the misery of tender love songs and doesn't lack one shred of emotion. You can really tell by listening to the songs on this album that she sings with conviction and total dedication. The tunes and lyrics are so catchy that after you have listened to the songs several times you will almost automatically sing along the next. A great album made by one of the best female country singers. A must have!
