Single Minded: Death Cab Cover the Cure, Gaslight Anthem Rule “Letterman”Photo: Winter/WireImage Death Cab for Cutie, “Love Song” [Cure Cover] One sad face deserves another: Ben Gibbard provides further proof that everyone who grew up in the suburbs owned a copy of Disintegration. If only he and Death Cab could swoop in and save Robert Smith from himself. The Gaslight Anthem, “The ‘59 Sound” [Live on Letterman] We’ve had this longstanding rule that no live band sounds good on TV. And then we saw NJ’s Gaslight Anthem on Letterman and concluded that either a) our rule was wrong, b) they are, in fact, the band of our generation, or c) some combination thereof. Absolutely breathtaking. The Police, “Roxanne” [Discotech Remix] Heart-stopping and electrifying, Discotech paint the Police bright pink and take them for a night on the town. Charlie Ash, “I Wanna Sex You Up” [Color Me Badd Cover] The critical reappraisal of Color Me Badd begins right here, with this aggro cover of their most grammatically improbable hit. Various Artists, “The Covers Mixtape” [Covers] Fourteen artists tackling 14 songs that aren’t their own, all of them handling their source material with class and panache. Start with Steve Earle’s rollicking punk/country cover of “Breed” and work outwards from there.

Steve Earle on Townes Van Zandt and Turning Up the Volume: “I’m Too Loud for My Own Audience”Photo: Arnold/Wireimage When Steve Earle was just 16 years old he struck up a relationship with songwriter Townes Van Zandt that would change the direction of the budding musician’s life: Van Zandt became a mentor to Earle, and now Earle is repaying the favor by recording a tribute album to his troubled late friend, who died in 1997. Brian Braiker rang up the rabble-rouser in Nashville to chat about the record, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, and Earle’s favorite new band: the Kings of Leon. • Q&A: The Music That Moves Steve Earle

Steve Earle - Washington Square Serenade Artist: Steve Earle Review: Supposedly, this Steve Earle record is unlike all other Steve Earle records because it was recorded with beats. But production by Dust Brother John King notwithstanding, it impacts just like any other Steve Earle record -- lyrics first. So fans will follow the title's hint and take this for the New York record of a Texan turned Nashvillian turned Greenwich Villager. After all, two of its strongest songs are "Down Here Below," a talky pan-New York City meditation from the twin vantages of Central... Rating: 3 Stars
