Vince Gill Album: “These Days [Box]”

Vince Gill Album: “These Days [Box]”
Description :
Personnel include: Vince Gill (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Dan Tyminski, Del McCoury, Diana Krall, Emmylou Harris, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Jenny Gill, John Anderson , LeAnn Rimes, Lee Ann Womack, Alison Krauss, Michael McDonald, Amy Grant, Patty Loveless, Phil Everly, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Rodney Crowell, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Sheryl Crow, Katrina Elam, Bonnie Raitt (vocals); Tom Bukovac (electric guitar); John Hobbs (piano); Pete Wasner (Wurlitzer piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Michael Rhodes (bass instrument); Chad Cromwell (drums); The Del McCoury Band. <p>Not since Prince released the three-hour, three-CD set EMANCIPATION in 1996 or the Magnetic Fields took a similar number of discs for the sprawling 69 LOVE SONGS in 1999 has an artist attempted something as expansive as Vince Gill's THESE DAYS. A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of the modern era. The four discs are thematically and stylistically arranged. Disc one, WORKIN' ON A BIG CHILL, is a 1960s-flavored rock-and-roll album that recalls Bob Dylan's late '60s work with the Band and features Bonnie Bramlett's vocals on several songs. Disc two, THE REASON WHY, is a modern pop record in the style of Shania Twain's international releases, with several duet partners including Sheryl Crow and Leann Rimes. Disc three, SOME THINGS NEVER GET OLD, is straight honky-tonk in the Ray Price and Lefty Frizzell tradition. Finally, disc four, LITTLE BROTHER, is a strictly acoustic bluegrass and folk album that cuts Gill's writing and singing to its most elemental. Taken together, the four albums reveal Vince Gill to be one of modern country's most impressive performers.

- Vince Gill's InVINCEable masterwork!!

This 4 CD set is Vince Gill at his best! 43 brand new songs on one collection with a list of guest artists that would astound anyone! 4 distinct styles of music bundled neatly into what will easily become his finest work to date! Already a favorite among critics and fans alike, this compilation shows that Vince can still be that triple threat in music: singer, songwriter, and musician.

There are too many songs that truly stand out to name them all here. CD#1 known as "The Rockin' Record" features up-tempo music and proves that Vince is not just a balladeer. Filled with great guitar solos and crisp clean vocals it is sure to please the ears and get the feet tapping to some good old country soul (and blues). "Love's Standin", which I believe is set to be the second single, is very remnicent of Vince in the early 90's. More importantly this CD stretches his artistic wings to a style that fits Vince perfectly and leaves the listener with a smile.

CD#2 known as "The Groovy Record" features the first single, "The Reason Why", a smooth beautiful ballad like only Vince can do with a touch of old-time piano to add the heart and soul of the song. Also featured on this section is one of Vince's finest songs to date, "Everything and Nothing". This song will move you with his high tenor voice soaring the melody to where only Vince can take it! "What You Give Away" is another powerful song backed by a choir that will amaze you at what Vince has been able to accomplish on this record.

CD#3, "The Country and Western Record" is all about country music at its finest. It's honky tonk, it's country swing-- everything country music has been about for the last 40 years. You'll feel like you took a step back in time while at the same time having a fresh modern sound. In fact, you have to wonder how Vince could have written this record along with the more contemporary sounds of the previous disks. "Sweet Little Corrina" really stands out on this set.

Finally, CD#4, "The Acoustic Record" features Vince's acoustic and bluegrass side. From moving ballads to rowdy up-tempo numbers, this set has been a long-time coming for Vince Gill. With everything from gospel to love gone bad, many fans will be happy to finally get a CD of this nature. As mentioned earlier, there are just too many songs that stand out to mention them all by name.

Whatever your style, whatever your interests, this newest work has it all! And it's top rate, top quality! You won't find a more complete collection by another artist that is capable of being so satisfying and original. If you've ever liked Vince Gill, These Days is for you. He is an artist at the top of his form. It's hard for words to really describe what 43 stand-out songs on one collection sounds like(no fillers on these CDs). And all this for such a reasonable price! You won't be dissapointed. If anything, you'll fall in love with Vince all over again!

- Five Stars is Not Enough

I recently had the pleasure of listening to Vince and his group of musician buddies perform many tracks off this album at the beautiful Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. As any fan knows, nothing beats a LIVE performace from the Vinster, but this album does a great job of embodying everything that is Vince Gill. The man is like some kind of musician superhero.

Do yourself a favor. Turn off the radio, buy this album, and discover true talent!

- Simply extraordinary

Not many albums make a listener stop in his tracks and sit still for three hours, all the while marveling at the album's remarkable songwriting, impeccable musicianship, and strong production. This is one. Any one of the four albums in the set would be considered excellent, but to put four of them back to back and release them in one set for a bargain basement price makes a music listener smile and say that good things can still happen in the industry.

Others here already have reviewed the different albums and songs. Some songs are very good, some are excellent, and some are transcendent. Not a single one is filler.

For readers who are wondering if ponying up $30 for four albums is worth it ("Will I really want to listen to all four albums?" What if I don't like some?"), well, I had those doubts too and I am very glad I clicked Amazon's "confirm purchase" button. I will be enjoying this album for years.

- Mr. Gill Shows Us Where He Belongs...

We have an interesting disscusion here. Is Country C & W? Is Country bluegrass music? Is Country radio friendly ballads? Is Country a subset of Rock and Blues? Vince Gill has defined Country as all of these things in one magnificent album(It is four CD's for the price of two). "These Days" is a definitive answer to all of the questions we have been debating about "NashVegas" for the last 15 years. Country can provide us with all of the pleasures of these musical forms without selling out to any one of them. Bravo, Mr. Gill!

- Unbelievably good. A master guitarist, stellar songwriter and voice to die for.

This is an amazing collection of ALL NEW works from not only a master guitarist and stellar songwriter...but one of the smoothest and most amazing voices around (for another voice this good...see "Neil Finn"). Even if you've never heard of Vince Gill, or don't listen to country music - buy this cd and enjoy it (each cd is in a different style). I just saw him last night at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles and he blew my mind. He and his roughly 20 piece band were sensational. He performed 5 or 6 tracks off each of the four cds in this collection and not one of them wasn't fantastic. There aren't enough good things to say about this box set of all new material.
