The first in the Masked Weasel label's three-volume compilation series features 16 tracks from Willie Nelson's abortive early 1960s attempts to become a Nashville star, as well as a variety of publishers' demos. The material showcases Nelson's laid-back croon (which is clearly influenced by his friend and peer Ray Price) on tunes like the acerbic "You Wouldn't Cross the Street to Say Goodbye," the aching "End of Understanding," and his early signature tune, "Night Life." Although the liner notes are minimal and the sound quality varies, these rough recordings have worn well over time, and now seem almost contemporary.
