This supposed CHILDREN's records contains many of Woody Guthrie's novelty numbers (that were always great for kids but have been known to charm many an adult too). These are essentially re-recordings of Woody's demos or homemade recordings with new backing by established folkie and acoustic heroes (including Woody's boy Arlo, or course, ably accompanied by Russ Kunkel, Eric Weissberg, James "Hutch" Hutchinson et al. et al. et al.). I gather some of the vocals have been doctored a bit to fit in with the latter day accompaniment. Purists may object, but kids (from 9 to 90) will love it.
Arlo has always been a great interpreter of his dad's work. He's actually fronted on most the tracks here. Woody's revived vocals are featured on "Riding In My Car" and the mostly spoken "Grassey Grass Grass." "This Land Is Your Land" is a duet featuring both of the famous Guthrie boys, which I assume means it was recorded "Nat and Natalie" style--not that there's anything WRONG with that. It IS, as the liner notes say, a rather "tender" moment.
The fact that this record is on Rounder speaks volume. While I don't love EVERY release Rounder Records has ever put out, their imprimatur on an ostensible "children's record" can only mean it'll be a quality release, one that will likely have appeal for adult listeners as well. Actually, that's an understatement in the case of THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND. It's a joy, plain and simple.
Opps, I really liked this album and had a tape which stopped working. so bought this. Unfortunately, i don't have an mp3 player and so am unable to enjoy it with my granddaughter. Guess i have to purchase the cd that was going to take many weeks to arrive. vicki
