Morello’s Street Sweeper Social Club Get Their Rage On at NY GigPhoto: Locisano/Getty With Rage Against the Machine back on ice for the time being, it was only a matter of time before Tom Morello would have to plug back in and, well, rage a little. As the Nightwatchman, he gets to dabble in Woody Guthrie-inspired acoustic tunes, but the siren song of electric guitars and big riffs must be too strong to avoid. As a warm-up for their opening slot on the impending Jane’s Addiction/Nine Inch Nails tour — which kicks off Friday in Florida (Rolling Stone will have

Springsteen Toasts . . . Himself (with Help from Patti Smith, the Hold Steady and more)Towards the end of last night’s Bruce Springsteen tribute concert at Carnegie Hall, seventy-seven-year-old folk legend Odetta was wheeled onstage, only to launch into Bruce Springsteen’s single worst song ever: “57 Channels (And Nothin’ On).” Accompanied only by a piano player she delivered a rendition that was part spoken-word and part Woody Guthrie talking blues. It was hypnotic. Immediately afterwards, Brooklyn indie rockers the Hold Steady took the stage and played the most joyou

Tom Morello Welcomes Slash, Perry Farrell, Flea at All-Star “Justice Tour” Stop Tom Morello kicked off his seven-city “Justice Tour” last night by calling every able-bodied rock legend in Los Angeles for a surreal night of music and social awareness at the Troubadour. “This is what happens when I go through my Blackberry,” Morello joked to the crowd before Stuart Copeland snuck behind the drums and Perry Farrell grabbed the mike for a thundering version of the Police’s “Message in a Bottle” just twenty minutes into the evening. It was the start of a marathon night that would showcase unforgettable collaborations by rock royalty for more than three and half hours. The concert featured early acoustic performances by Morello, Pete Yorn, Jerry Cantrell and the MC5’s Wayne Kramer. Morello — acting as master of ceremonies and orchestrating the chaos — then brought out what would serve as the nucleus of the evening’s house band: Travis Barker on drums, Flea playing bass and a rotating lineup of Steve Vai, Slash, Dave Navarro and Morello sharing guitar duties. The dream team backed up Cantrell for a version of Thin Lizzy’s “Jailbreak” and rocked out covers such as Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” Throughout the evening Morello spoke about the tour’s goal of promoting local social activism and tackling problems endemic to each host city. While the activism is integral to the tour, Morello is quick to point out that the mood is celebratory and he views each night as “a freedom party.” Sen Dog and B-Real of Cypress Hill didn’t need any help celebrating as they arrived onstage (joint in hand) to knock out “Insane in the Brain” and “Rock Superstar.” Morello closed out the show with a poignant rendition of the Woody Guthrie classic “This Land is Your Land” (like he did at SXSW) that had every voice in the packed club singing backup. Tom Morello’s Monster Jam: Slash, Serj Tankian, Wayne Kramer, Mick Mars and More Join Nightwatchman at Tiny L.A. Gig Tom Morello gave an early Christmas present to the 100-plus fans packed into Hollywood’s Hotel Café last night. As a send-off for his final gig of the year as the Nightwatchman, the Rage Against the Machine guitarist assembled an eclectic group of music legends that jammed on inspired covers and collaborations for more than four hours. Morello’s weekly appearances at the cozy venue serve as an opportunity to raise money and awareness for his social-action foundation Axis of Justice, which provides aid to the homeless and hungry. The evening began in the normal fashion with Morello playing a handful of acoustic songs. His small set complete, Morello recounted a story about a man with a great voice at a Woody Guthrie tribute. The man turned out to be Academy Award-winning actor Tim Robbins, who then climbed onstage and proved he was worthy of Morello’s praise with a solid, albeit lyrically altered rendition of Phil Ochs‘ classic protest tune “State of Mississippi” and the Christmas staple “Silent Night.” Serj Tankian, who along with Morello co-founded Axis of Justice, next appeared at the piano for two songs, then Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman, rising songwriter Elijah Forrest and Richard Patrick of Filter. It didn’t seem realistic when Morello took the microphone at this point and joked that the evening was just getting started, but two and half hours later it was clear he had been dead serious. Moments later Perry Farrell brought his Satellite Party onstage with Morello accompanying on electric guitar to play two songs before closing with a spot-on version of “Jane Says.” The evening then slipped into high gear when Morello introduced Alice in Chains which entailed Jerry Cantrell and new singer Will DuVall. The two played a brilliant version of “Nutshell” that was a deft replication of their MTV Unplugged performance and followed with a cover of the Who’s “Squeeze Box.” Most of the crowd, already stoked about the incredible lineup, had assumed the Alice in C

Single Minded: Cool Tracks From Paramore, Amy Winehouse, Sean Kingston, Eve and Bat for Lashes Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more. Paramore, “Born For This” [Live, Fuse] Lightning-speed power punk seconds away from detonation. Hayley Williams sings, “We want the airwaves back!” and we go, “Would you like us to throw in the TV as well?” Remind us again why this band isn’t enormous? Sean Kingston feat. Fabolous, Sheek Louch, AC, Collie Buddz, Brick & Lace, JoJo, “Beautiful Girls Megamix” [Remix, Imeem] Seven-minute track combines all existing versions of the Sean Kingston summer juggeranut “Beautiful Girls.” Except for that one with Ben E. King. Bat for Lashes, “I’m On Fire” [Live/Bruce Springsteen Cover, Popdrivel] Ever wonder what it would be like if the Boss revered Robin Guthrie instead of Woody Guthrie? Okay, neither have we. But this cover is still terrifically chilling. Eve, “Party Like a Rock Star” [Live/Shop Boyz Reappropriation, AOL] How do you save a sort of mediocre summer jam? Put Eve on it. Her motormouthed rapid-fire flow decimates the track, working breathless magic in under two minutes. Amy Winehouse, “Tears Dry on Their Own,” “He Can Only Hold Her,” “Back to Black” [Daily Motion] Considering the fact that she both a) showed up and b) sang on-key, we’re tempted to label these “rare tracks.” Photo: Natalie Zfat

Fans Clamor for Pink Floyd Reunion Tour, Dave Grohl Offers to Drum for Led Zeppelin, DMC Scores an Emmy A Europe-wide poll has revealed the people want a Pink Floyd reunion tour. Twenty-six percent of 5,000 census takers said that they would like to see a full-scale version of what PF fans were briefly teased with at 2005’s Live 8 concert. Unfortunately, Floyd guitarist David Gilmour told us he doesn’t think a reunion is going to happen. Rounding out the top five in the survey were Abba, Guns N’ Roses, The Jam and Talking Heads. A twenty-year-man died at the Smashing Pumpkins concert in Vancouver on Monday night. The victim was reportedly either crowd surfing or moshing in the moments before his death; foul play is not suspected. Stone Gossard’s non-Pearl Jam side project Brad will reunite for one night only when they appear at NYC’s Webster Hall for a tribute to both Woody and Marjorie Guthrie and the 40th anniversary of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America. The October 17th show will also feature a performance by Billy Bragg and hosting duties by actor Tim Robbins. Foo Fighter Dave Grohl has offered his drumming services to Led Zeppelin when they reunite November 26th at London’s O2 Arena. “I’m at Led Zeppelin’s beck and call,” says Grohl, who will likely attend the Ahmet Ertegun tribute event. Darryl McDaniel, or the DMC in Run-DMC, added another trophy to his likely large fireplace mantle after winning an Emmy last night for his VH1 rockumentary DMC: My Adoption Journey. The Celebrity Rap Superstar judge beat out CBS stalwart Mike Wallace and two PBS docs to win the award.
