- Hank at his best

This is a great CD and a must have for any fan of hanks, you can't go wrong when you mix Hank Jr singing some of his dad's songs with his on style plus a few hank wrote his self about his dad. And you can't beat the price either i mean i would have payed double this for it :)

- I'm sure Hank didn't do 'em this way

There was nothing wrong with the way Hank Sr did 'em, but there's sure nothing wrong with the way Hank Jr does 'em either.

Actually, only four songs in this collection were written by Hank Williams Sr., "Honky Tonkin', "Move It On Over", "You're Gonna Change(or I'm Gonna Leave)" and "Kaw-liga", which was co-written with Fred Rose. Hank Jr rocks them all. He also does a great version of another of his father's most popular recordings, "Lovesick Blues", which was written not by Hank Sr, but by Irving Mills and Cliff Friend. Hank Jr's version appeared on his 1983 album MAN OF STEEL, and includes guest vocals by Leon Redbone.

"A Whole Lot of Hank" was co-written by Hank Jr, as well as the hit duet with Waylon Jennings, "The Conversation" which was co-written with Waylon, and appeared on Waylon's 1983 album WAYLON AND COMPANY. One of the highlights of this album, is the Waylon Jennings penned song, "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" which was a big hit for Waylon, from his 1975 #1 album, DREAMING MY DREAMS. Bocephus changes quite a few words, but does a great version. This recording appeared on Hank's 1981 album ROWDY.

Another highlight is "Ballad of Hank Williams", written by Jerry Rivers, who played fiddle with Hank Sr's band, The Drifting Cowboys. This recording originally appeared on the 1981 Hank Jr album, THE PRESSURE IS ON. This duet by Hank and Jerry, is a rewriting of the Johnny Horton hit "The Battle of New Orleans", written by Jimmie Driftwood. This hilarious duet tells the story of Hank Wiliams Sr, including his habits of spending money and firing people from his band.

"So he fired my a** and he fired Jerry Rivers

And he fired everybody just as hard as he could go

He fired old Cedric and he fired Sammy Pruitt

And he fired some people that he didn't even know"

The final track, and a fitting closer for this tribute to Hank Williams, is one of my favorite Kris Kristofferson songs, "If You Don't Like Hank Williams". Hank puts his own touch to this song, as he does with every song on the album.

All the recordings have appeared on previous albums, so there's really nothing new, but if you only had one cd of Bocephus, this would be a good one to have. I have many of Hank Jr's albums, but it's good to have these songs on one cd. This is one of the best Hank Williams Jr collections I've heard.
