Jimmy Buffett Album: “Down to Earth/High Cumberland Jubilee”
Description :
Includes two albums: DOWN TO EARTH (1970) and HIGH CUMBERLAND JUBILEE (1976).
Personnel: Buzz Cason (vocals, keyboards, background vocals); Bob Cook (guitars, harmonica, bass instrument); Lanny Fiel (guitars, piano); Bobby Thompson (banjo); Travis Turk (kazoo, drums); Bergen White (trombone); Dave Haney (bass instrument); Rick Fiel (bass guitar); Carl Himmel, Paul Tabet (drums); Don Kloetzke (background vocals).
This double-CD combines Jimmy Buffett's 1970 recording debut with his 1976 song cycle HIGH CUMBERLAND JUBILEE. The former album finds the onetime smuggler at home with thinly veiled drug references such as "Ellis Dee (He Ain't Free)," social comment such as "The Christian?" and "The Missionary," and hardscrabble ballads like "There's Nothing Soft About Hard Times," as well as including one of his best early songs, "The Captain and the Kid." The mid-'70s release is a country-oriented set, blending the sharp-eyed observation of songs such as "Rockefeller Square" and "Bend a Little" with affecting vignettes such as "Livingston's Gone to Texas" and the down-home "God Don't Own a Car," while the medley of the title track and "Comin' Down Slow" is one of Buffett's most intricately arranged productions.

- What You Need To Know

Jimmy Buffett's debut album Down To Earth (1972) featured very strong writing and performances, with songs like "Truckstop Salvation," "Ellis Dee (He Ain't Free)," "The Christian?" and "Captain America." The follow-up album, High Cumberland Jubilee, featured some equally strong recordings, including "Livingston's Gone to Texas," "God Don't Own a Car," "Rockefeller Square," and "High Cumberland Jubilee/Comin' Down Slow."

* This release includes Jimmy Buffett's first two albums, plus two bonus tracks: "Richard Frost" (the B-side to his debut single) and the previously unreleased "High Cumberland Dilemma."

* Singer-songwriter Buzz Cason ("Everlasting Love," "Soldier of Love"), who continued to work with Buffett on his breakthrough albums for ABC Records, produced both albums.

* These two original albums are available together for the first time, and at a very special price.

- A good collection addition

The production was a little bit lacking, and Jimmy's vocals were a bit unrefined, but the music makes a nice addition for any collection.
