Liner Note Author: Budd Scoppa.

Recording information: 1956 - 1963.

For many legendary artists, it's difficult to choose what material should be commemorated on a best-of compilation. The tough question inevitably arises, "What does one leave out?" Because Patsy Cline died tragically in an airplane crash at the age of 30, she left behind only about 100 songs. Nonetheless, the compilers of the single-disc DEFINITIVE COLLECTION must have still had to make difficult decisions here, since the genius of Cline was that once she sang a tune, not only did she make it her own, she turned it into an ineradicable hit.

THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION presents many of these chart-toppers, including the classic singles "Walkin' After Midnight," "She's Got You," and "I Fall to Pieces." Of particular note, this album contains Cline's original version of "Walkin' After Midnight," not the 1961 remake that is heard on the ever-popular GREATEST HITS. Of course, Willie Nelson's "Crazy" is also included on this album, as are many other Cline favorites. If you are looking to buy a well-thought-out anthology of Patsy Cline, THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION is the perfect choice.

- Patsy made female country singers acceptable
Patsy set the standard for female country singers, with many of those that followed trying (or so it seemed) to be the next Patsy Cline - even today, over forty years after her death in a plane crash. Many compilations are available but most of them seem to miss something important. Not this one - all of Patsy's classic songs can be found here.
Crazy was a top ten pop hit in America and (in 1990) a top twenty hit in Britain. Heartaches was Patsy's first American top forty pop hit. Don Gibson wrote Sweet dreams and had a big country hit with it, but once Patsy recorded it, it became much more popular and will be forever thought of as a Patsy Cline song. She's got you was an American top twenty pop hit and was also Patsy's first British hit, albeit only a minor one I fall to pieces was yet another top twenty pop hit in America. Walking after midnight is the song that began it all for Patsy in the fifties. Poor man's roses, Back in baby's arms and Leaving on your mind are other Patsy classics included here. Faded love, a cover of a Bob Wills song that, like Sweet dreams, is regarded as a Patsy Cline classic despite being a cover.
Also here are Patsy's fine interpretations of Lovesick blues, Half as much (Hank Williams), True Love (Bing Crosby), San Antonio rose (Bob Wills), Always (written by Irving Berlin) and many other fine songs.
If you just want one CD of Patsy's music, make it this one.

- Beautiful Collection
This is a terrific collection with a wide range of songs from one of the most spectacular voices the music industry has ever heard. Patsy Cline's gorgeous voice and the emotion she put into her songs makes them heartbreaking to listen to, or if an upbeat song, especially fun to listen to. She just can't be topped. I only wish there were a Patsy Cline Christmas album available. I highly recommend this CD to any Patsy Cline or country music fan. Great selection of hit songs!

- This is a great collection!
I looked for awhile to find a colllection that included almost all the songs I remembered from my younger days. This CD pretty well does that. I have heard a lot of imitators over the years, but no one has come very close to her great style and sound.

- WONDERFUL!!!
This collection is "wonderful". Also, try to see the live show, "Always....Patsy Cline" when it comes to your area. The show is much more than just singing as a "fan" tells the story of her supposed "involvment" with Patsy. Both this CD and the show are "the greatest!"

- Oh all right it's fantastic!
Bearing in mind I absolutely and passionately love Patsy's Greatest Hits album, this one comes a very close second. You will need Greatest Hits for the ideal version of "Walkin' After Midnight", an improvement on the original included here.
Patsy's vocal persona was one of wounded, obsessional devotion. "Crazy" is indeed her theme song. With ten more tracks to share her unbalanced dedication, all of which are well worth inclusion, you just have all that much longer to enjoy her. Bear in mind I have only listened once, I feel confident the entire contents will form an essential part of my listening regime.
As a vehicle for demonstrating Patsy's incomparable communicative powers, this CD is probably the best you can get. Greatest Hits is pure refined gold, this one is an entire gold mine. Start digging.
